What does an Integrative Mental Health Practitioner do?
I received this text recently:
Before you jump to conclusions thinking that my response was unacceptably rude...
This message was from a family member.
And I realised, that even my own family don't actually know what I do.
Which made me think that maybe YOU don't either....
WHAT DO I DO?
I definitely work with people who have been diagnosed with depression and or anxiety. And sometimes with people with diagnoses of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anorexia too. The clients I work with have all sorts of diagnoses ~ some very old diagnoses that have stuck with them over the years, although they have been completely symptom-free for many years.
Some newly diagnosed, with new symptoms, new mental health issues.
A diagnosis is a label given to help group a set of symptoms. It doesn't necessarily represent what might be going on in their bodies & minds. And although it's helpful to have a label, it may not give us the reason 'why'.
Some people are depressed because of psychological stressors, some due to physical stressors, some due to nutrient deficiencies, some due to mental or physical trauma.
'Anxiety' manifests in a number of ways. Sleeplessness, gut issues, social anxiety, 'shyness', panic.
I take a holistic approach
The approach I take is to look at the person as a whole, whether they have a diagnosis or not, to see what might be contributing to the issues they currently are experiencing and what can be done to support recovery with or without medication.
This might include diet, lifestyle, nutrients, counselling, medication, meditation, exercise, rest, sleep, supplements etc.
So yes, I see people who have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety. Or who haven’t yet been diagnosed. Or who feel stuck and want help from a different source.
And if this sounds like this would benefit you - or someone you know - please be in touch. I'm always happy to help, offer advice and if I am not the right person for you, I am happy to help you find who is.
